Olympic Restrictions Roll in. “Black Lives Matter” on the Chopping Block?

Thousands of Athletes will descend upon Tokyo, Japan for the world’s elite sporting event this summer, but they better leave their political views at home.

The 2021 Summer Olympics which were postponed for an entire year due to Coronavirus is planning to strictly enforce “Rule 50, ‘which bans political or social justice protests of any kind at the international athletic event set to take place in just a few weeks.’”

The Olympic Committee left no room for error by explicitly calling out the ban of Black Lives Matter apparel during the July 2021 sporting events.

It is yet to be decided what the penalty will be for breaking these rules, or if any athletes plan to protest the rules.

The International Olympic Committee plans to uphold “Rule 50 says that ‘no kind of demonstration or political, religious or racial propaganda is permitted in any Olympic sites, venues or other areas.’”

Even after coming off of a politically charged summer, this restriction may be telling athletes to focus more on their sports profession and less on their political campaigns.
