In a lawsuit filed against several far-left lawmakers and anti-Israel organizations, five Columbia University students have accused them of supporting anti-Semitic encampments at the college that led to harassment and intimidation of Jewish students.
Democratic Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Jamal Bowman, and Ilhan Omar were named in the lawsuit as well as various anti-Israel groups.
The lawsuit alleges that the Gaza Encampment at Columbia University engaged in extreme and illegal conduct that violated university rules.
It describes incidents where Jewish students were harassed, physically blocked, intimidated, and bullied by the occupants of the encampment.
The plaintiffs recounted experiences of encountering offensive and anti-Semitic signs and messages during the protests, including instances where they were singled out because of their Jewish identity.
One student, identified as “Eric Doe,” expressed feeling a sense of uncertainty and fear due to the actions of the protestors and administration.
Another student, “Michael Doe,” reported being targeted with derogatory remarks such as “Keep walking Zionist” and being followed and screamed at by anti-Israel protesters.
The lawsuit emphasized the real damages suffered by thousands of students who were simply trying to attend classes and pursue their education while facing acts incited by their classmates and professors with support from outside activists.
During the time of these protests, Ocasio-Cortez and Omar voiced their support for student-led demonstrations on various campuses including Columbia University.
This public backing further fueled tensions on campus. In fact, there were reports that Omar suggested some Jewish students were “pro-genocide.”
As a result of these events, Columbia University settled a lawsuit with a Jewish student who represented others affected by the protests.
The settlement included measures to ensure safe passage for students, such as providing 24-hour security escorts if necessary and offering alternative ways for threatened students to come and go from campus.
Jay Edelson, an attorney for the plaintiff, emphasized that peaceful protest is essential but condemned extremists for attempting to exclude individuals they disagree with.
He highlighted that in the settlement, students will have a dedicated security monitor to address safety concerns on campus.
This legal action sheds light on the serious impact of anti-Israel activism on university campuses.
It underscores how these activities can lead to discrimination and intimidation against certain groups of students while disrupting academic life for many others.
The resolution reached through this lawsuit aims to ensure a safer environment for all students at Columbia University amid heightened tensions surrounding this contentious issue.
