Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) has recently introduced legislation that would put an end to “birthright citizenship” for children born in the United States to parents who are illegal immigrants, foreign spies, or foreign terrorists.
The bill, titled the Ending Birthright Citizenship Act, aims to address the issue of unauthorized entry into the country and the strain it puts on our resources and security.
As Sen. Cotton stated in a recent interview with Breitbart, “President Joe Biden’s immigration policies have essentially rolled out a welcome mat for illegal migrants from all over the world, creating an unsustainable flood at our borders.”
Birthright citizenship is a contentious topic that has been debated for years. The 14th Amendment states that “all persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States.”
However, there is disagreement over whether this applies to children of illegal immigrants.
Sen. Cotton argues that birthright citizenship was never intended to be granted to children of those who entered the country illegally.
He believes that by ending this practice, it will discourage illegal immigration and protect American sovereignty.
The proposed bill would only apply to future births and not revoke citizenship from those already born under birthright citizenship.
It would also not affect children born to U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents.
While some may argue that this bill goes against the principles of inclusivity and equality, Sen. Cotton maintains that it is necessary for national security and upholding our laws.
He also points out that other countries such as Australia and Ireland do not offer birthright citizenship.
In response to criticisms about potentially separating families if one parent is an illegal immigrant and another is a U.S. citizen, Sen. Cotton stated in his interview with Breitbart, “We can’t let sentimentality dictate our laws.”
He also noted that under current laws, a child born to illegal immigrant parents can still obtain citizenship through naturalization once they turn 18.
President Biden’s immigration policies have been heavily criticized by Republicans for being too lenient and causing a surge of migrants at the border.
In his first day in office, President Biden signed executive orders to halt construction of the border wall and end the “Remain in Mexico” policy, which required asylum seekers to wait in Mexico while their cases were processed.
These actions, along with other changes made by the Biden administration, have been seen as an invitation for unauthorized entry into the country.
The Ending Birthright Citizenship Act aims to address this issue and discourage illegal immigration.
The bill has received support from other Republican lawmakers such as Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ), who stated, “Birthright citizenship incentivizes illegal immigration and undermines our national security.”
However, it is expected to face opposition from Democrats and immigrant rights groups.
