Todd Blanche was sworn in Monday as attorney general, completing a difficult confirmation process and placing President Donald Trump’s former personal lawyer at the head of the Justice Department.
Blanche’s nomination advanced after he provided written assurances that the administration would abandon a proposed $1.8 billion compensation fund for Trump allies who said they had been wronged by the department. The dispute became a major issue for several Republican senators whose votes were needed for confirmation.
The new attorney general now takes control of the department as lawmakers continue debating its independence, enforcement priorities, and relationship with the White House.
