A chance encounter at Kroger’s has led to an incredible teen getting the opportunity to learn a new craft and start a new chapter in his life.
One evening, Matt White was conducting his routine business at a Kroger supermarket when an incident occurred that would forever alter his life. The 30-year-old music business graduate was picking up the standard household items, walking aisle after aisle. It began as a totally ordinary trip to the store.
White had never encountered anything weird when shopping at this specific Kroger, even though it was situated in a wealthy neighborhood of a generally underdeveloped portion of Memphis, Tennessee. However, it ended a little differently this time when he paid for his groceries and started to leave the store.
White was about to leave Kroger when a shadowy teen boy started to approach him. White wondered what the teen wanted. Was he a beggar? Why was he all by himself at the store? He eyed him curiously as he approached, thinking of the possible scenarios in his head.
The boy eventually walked up to him at that point. White observed the teenager’s expression, which mixed embarrassment and sorrow before he even managed to articulate his words. He was immediately captivated by the teenager.
In a social media post of what happened that night, Matt wrote, “With his head hanging in shame, it seemed like he had been turned down 100 times.”
It turns out the kid was 16-year-old Chauncy Jones Black and he had trekked via bus to what he referred to as the “rich people’s Kroger” in hopes of working for food. Standing before White empty-handed, Black had only an hour before he had to catch the last bus home, where his mother was waiting for him.
In exchange for a pack of glazed donuts, the teen asked Matt White if he could carry his groceries out to his car for him. Matt recalled saying, “He looked ashamed, hungry and broken.”
“In my heart, I screamed a loud ‘yes!’ But to him, I just chuckled and said, ‘yeah dude, we’ll get you some doughnuts,’” White said. But the incident certainly wouldn’t end with a pack of donuts.
Having only each other with his mom and a bus pass between the two of them, Chauncy explained to Matt that he enjoys school, receives straight A’s, and is looking for a job to assist his mom pay the rent.
The teen graciously took him up on the offer, as Matt invited him back into the shop and asked him to load the cart with everything he needed after hearing his story.
Matt White volunteered to give the boy a ride home when they were shopping because he didn’t want the youngster to have to carry all those bags on his own. Matt was shocked by what he saw when he arrived at Chauncy’s house.
“When we got to his house, I was truly humbled. He wasn’t kidding. He and his mom had nothing. They didn’t even have beds or furniture. They were sleeping on pads made out of sleeping bags, they had two lamps and nothing in their fridge,” Matt wrote in his post.
Chauncy’s mother, Barbara, who was “so sweet but extremely vulnerable” and has a disease that makes it difficult for her to walk, shivers, particularly surprised Matt White. It was clear how much the boy and his mother loved one another.
“He looked like a kid again,” Matt said, adding that there was hope in his eyes, whereas before he was full of despair, as Matt helped the teen fill his fridge and cabinets with all the groceries, he could see the light start to come back into the boy’s face.
Matt White couldn’t get the Black family out of his head after he left. So he decided to do for them, feeling impacted by the boy and after posting what occurred on Facebook. Thanks to generous citizens of our nation who were moved by Matt’s message and Chauncy’s desire to lift himself and his ailing mom out of poverty, he created a GoFundMe for him that has helped the family raise more than $342,000 in total.
Matt explained in a GoFundMe update,
“As of today, Barbara and Chauncy have a new life. God has provided for them a home, a car, a new school, he has restored Barbara’s health and continues to present them with endless opportunities for the future.” All of this served as the catalyst for an even bigger movement that Matt called “Chauncy’s Chance.”
“Every dollar donated to Chauncy’s Chance was put into a protected trust that will provide them a secure future for decades. In every sense of the word, God has provided, But there were so many more miraculous things that happened along the way,” he added.
“In the process of creating all the miracles for Chauncy’s Chance, God pieced together the most beautiful tapestry of fellowship and community I have ever witnessed: one that is so strong that we believe He intends to use it to uplift yet another family in need,” Matt explained.
Before introducing the next beneficiary of Chauncy’s Chance, the volunteer movement that began at a Kroger grocery store when one man went above and beyond to make a difference, Matt White said, “With God’s blessing, we are stepping out in faith to fulfill that mission.”
