A Washington family’s peaceful vacation at one of Orlando’s most well-known resorts was interrupted Monday by out-of-the-ordinary screams coming from the pool at their Westgate Resort.
Carlos Mullen was staying with his fiancée Christina Lamothe on the third floor of the Westgate Resort in Orlando, Florida when he heard screams.
“I hear this blood-curdling scream. People were just screaming, ‘Help! Lifeguard, lifeguard!'” said Christina Lamothe. But there was no lifeguard on duty.
“I looked out and I just see a kid lying there,” said Lamothe’s fiance, Carlos Mullen.
The Army vet raced to the source of the commotion – the hotel pool – and discovered an unconscious 6-year-old boy who had just been pulled from the pool by his brothers. Mullen administered CPR on the boy.
“I looked in this kid’s eyes, and I’ve seen shock on a man’s face before,” Mullen said. “This kid had that look.”
Mullen’s military training paid off. He performed CPR on the boy and within just a few moments, was able to bring him back to consciousness.
“God forbid he didn’t go down there, I don’t know what would have happened. That family probably wouldn’t have had a son anymore,” Lamothe said.
Mullen said he doesn’t consider himself a hero, saying instead that the boy’s brothers, who pulled him out of the water, deserve credit.
“If you see something going down, don’t be afraid to jump in and help,” he added.
Folks online also shared their thoughts on the story:
“Thank God for your quick thinking and willingness to do what was necessary to save that precious child,”
“THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT A TRUE HEROE DOES. God Bless You and Keep You Safe in His Loving Care.”
“What a heart warming story,”
“God bless that young hero for being in the right place at the right time.”
