Ahmad Massoud, a prominent figure in the anti-Taliban resistance movement and son of the revered Afghan leader Ahmad Shah Massoud, recently delivered a stark message to the United States: Terrorism is on the rise, and America could face a series of attacks at any moment as it remains a prime target for radical extremists.
In an exclusive interview with the U.K.’s Daily Mail, Massoud emphasized that an attack on U.S. or European soil is not a matter of if, but when.
The legacy of Ahmad Shah Massoud, known as the “Lion of Panjshir,” looms large over his son’s efforts. Ahmad Massoud has taken up his father’s mantle and has been actively combatting radical Islam and the resurgence of the Taliban in Afghanistan.
His new memoir, “In the Name of My Father,” which was released recently, underscores the dangers created by the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Afghanistan in August 2021.
According to Massoud, this withdrawal has left behind a dangerous vacuum that is now being exploited by extremist elements.
He points out that President Biden’s decision to withdraw all U.S. troops without maintaining any residual force was a critical misstep that paved the way for increased terrorist threats not only in America but also in Europe.
The withdrawal of U.S. forces from Afghanistan marked the end of a two-decade-long conflict that cost American taxpayers over $2 trillion.
This exit was guided by an agreement reached between the Trump administration and the Taliban in February 2020 in Doha, Qatar.
The agreement aimed to impose combat restrictions on both parties while securing the withdrawal of all NATO forces from Afghanistan in exchange for Taliban promises to counter terrorism.
However, this deal ultimately led to significant setbacks for Afghanistan’s security forces and paved the way for Taliban resurgence.
The Biden administration’s decision to fully withdraw U.S. troops without maintaining any residual presence further weakened Afghan security forces’ ability to combat ongoing insurgencies.
The rapid collapse of Afghan National Security Forces culminated in Kabul falling to the Taliban on August 15, 2021—a development that shocked many observers around the world.
In his memoir, Massoud chronicles his lifelong struggle for freedom in Afghanistan and issues a solemn warning to global leaders: Ignoring Afghanistan’s plight could have dire consequences for international security.
Massoud’s concerns about rising terrorism threats are shared by others who have warned about America’s national security vulnerabilities.
Recent protests on college campuses across the United States have reignited warnings issued by United Arab Emirates Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan back in 2017 regarding potential security risks posed by radical elements.
“There will come a day that we will see far more radical extremists and terrorists coming out of Europe because of lack of decision making, trying to be politically correct, or assuming that they know the Middle East, and they know Islam, and they know the others,” bin Zayed said. “And I’m sorry, but that’s pure ignorance.”

Meanwhile, Massoud called on President Biden to reassess U.S. policy towards Afghanistan and cautioned him that the failure to do so could have dire consequences for the United States’ regional and global security.
“The political situation is helping the Taliban massively,” Massoud told the Daily Mail, “from Ukraine to the war on Gaza and, and many other things happening around the globe.”
He added, “It helps the fatigue (from the West) when they are busy elsewhere. There is a numbness in the West. They are forgetting about what’s happening in Afghanistan.”
However, even in the face of overwhelming challenges, Massoud remains resolute in his mission to defy the Taliban’s authority and bring back harmony to his country.
