Two of the three suspects were also shot by Almendarez in the gunfire exchange. He was then was taken to a hospital where he later died.
From the Daily Mail:
“He told his wife to run, to get away from danger as he put himself in harm’s way to protect the rest of the community and to try and stop a crime,” the sheriff said during a press conference.
Despite being mortally wounded, Almendarez, a 23-year veteran on the force, was able to return fire, striking two of the men. The third suspect fled the scene and remained at large as of Friday,
In a statement, Houston County Sheriff, Ed Gonzalez said:
“At a personal level and as sheriff, that’s evil. We’ve got evil individuals that are out there,”
He added: “We lost another hero in our community. We’re tired of crime in this community.”
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) offered prayers for Almendarez’s family in a statement Friday.
“Deputy Darren Almendarez lost his life while answering the call to serve and protect his fellow Texans, and this tragedy is a heartbreaking reminder of the sacrifices our law enforcement officers make both on and off duty,” Abbott said.
Violent crime continues to increase around the country since Joe Biden took the office and Democrats from the local level to the federal level continue to ignore it widely. How many lives should be gone from their families first before they start taking action?
Now, the Biden administration even making it worst as he opens our borders to even more unvetted illegal immigrants, instead of addressing the crime and finding a way how to eradicate crimes.
