Do yourself a favor and watch this “safety” public service announcement.
Why would auto manufacturers bother to put it on cars if drivers were not, in fact, supposed to use them? I’m talking about that lever mere inches from your hand gripping the steering wheel. Perhaps you’ve seen it; it’s called a turn signal!
That’s what Indiana State Police Sgt. John Perrine of the Indianapolis district took to social media in a humorous video that has gone viral on social media.
Officer Perrine, a public information officer for Indiana State Police, filmed this PSA that will teach you, in a very tongue-in-cheek way, the basics of that “incredible” stick next to your steering wheel.
“What if I told you there’s a feature on every car that’s standard that not only will help prevent crashes, but also help prevent road rage a little bit?” he asks at the start of the video.
Perrine, 35, then demonstrates what happens when you push the turn signal up or down. Spoiler alert: Lights on the front and the back of your car will flash.
The video has certainly made an impact: It’s received more than 14 million views and more than 262,000 shares since it was posted.
Perrine told the media that he made the video because he too often sees drivers not use their signal, whether it’s because of a lack of courtesy or just plain laziness. It’s a problem that he describes as “just something that’s a pet peeve of a lot of people.”
Perrine explains how this foreign concept may “require you to put down your coffee or your cellphone, or whatever you have in your hands so that you can safely drive.”
Shortly before the PSA announcement ends, he explains to his viewers that it is the right thing to do to use turn signals and that it is actually illegal not to use them.
He then ends the video by saying, “please use your turn signal.”
If only more drivers would use turn signals every time, then the world would be a much safer and happier place. Kudos to Indiana State Police Trooper John Perrine for a job well done.
