Decision Desk HQ projected Democrat Josh Turek the winner over GOP Rep. Ashley Hinson in Iowa’s U.S. Senate race at 11:16 pm ET. The Gateway Pundit reported the call and said CNN subsequently projected that Democrats had won the Senate majority.
Who called it and when
Decision Desk HQ posted: “Decision Desk HQ projects Josh Turek wins the IA US Senate General Election #DecisionMade: 11:16 PM EST.”
The Gateway Pundit wrote that the seat is currently held by Republican Sen. Joni Ernst, who is retiring in 2027. The outlet also said Turek is the fifth Democrat to flip a Republican seat on Tuesday.
What a Democratic majority means (per The Hill)
Quoting The Hill, The Gateway Pundit relayed: “Democrats have won the Senate majority… Victory in the Senate will deliver additional oversight powers to Democrats, who will now have a much bigger say on administration and judicial nominations. They will also set the schedule for the Senate, and have new powers to call in administration officials for hearings.” The Hill also said the wins “set the stage for Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) to return as majority leader in 2027 and for hardball negotiations with Trump on an array of issues, including on federal spending levels.”
House control, per earlier projections
The Gateway Pundit previously reported that Decision Desk HQ projected Democrats had flipped the House after four years of GOP control, and wrote that House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) “will likely become Speaker of the House.”
What’s not final
The projections cited above are not official state-certified results. Vote totals and margins may change as counting continues.
