A gallant police officer raised an overturned car by himself to free a trapped passenger, as seen in a heart-pounding video. However, the Deputy argues that another label fits him much better as he delivered a message that many people needed to hear since he has received praise for being a hero.
When Jon Holt, a deputy with the Gloucester County Sheriff’s Office, witnessed a speeding automobile rollover, he immediately went into superhero mode.
Deputy Holt observed another car spin out as he was on his way to the hospital while he was helping the Virginia State Police investigate a probable DUI accident. This is when it all started. A mom and her children were in a sedan when it overturned in Gloucester County, Virginia.
What followed was filmed on his body camera. The Gloucester County Sheriff’s Office subsequently posted the video on social media, and it rapidly gained popularity for good cause. Holt recalled the incident saying that after seeing the collision, the deputy realized he needed to act quickly and arrived on the site as the first responder.
“So, I was on the scene, I observed the vehicle upside down with one of the juvenile occupants outside the vehicle,” he said.
Deputy Holt is seen in his patrol car at the beginning of the video after seeing the accident. Before running to the car, where he hears a child screaming from within, he can be heard telling dispatch that it has been “flipped upside down.” Informing Holt that his mother is stuck inside, the youngster calls out to the police.
Describing the heartbreaking scene, Holt said, “He said she can’t breathe, and you know, [he’s] calling to his mother, and at that point, her head was pinned underneath the vehicle.”
In the video, Holt can be heard answering, but it’s clear that he realized he had to make an effort to assist her, but after the deputy got the child out of the car, the body camera video fades to black, leaving only the sound of Deputy Holt lifting the car with all of his might. He then did the only thing he could think of after getting the kid out of the automobile. He made the choice to lift the flipped vehicle in order to rescue the woman who was trapped underneath.
A statement from the Gloucester County Sheriff’s Office said:
“The driver was laying underneath the vehicle with her head pinned by the sunroof. Seeing the trauma her child was witnessing, Deputy J. Holt went into overdrive, through sheer will and determination due to fearing the female may succumb to her circumstance in front of her panic-stricken child, Deputy J. Holt took quick action.”
Holt said, “At that point, I put my shoulder into the doorframe and braced as best I could, and I said, ‘All I have to do is just stand up.’ That’s what all I was telling myself.”
“At that point, with as much effort as I could, I tried to stand up and stood up enough so she could free herself and was able to start breathing,” he added. Although his video had gone dark, his efforts were clear as he’s heard “straining and groaning loudly as he attempts to singlehandedly lift the car off of the woman,” he added.
The sheriff’s office reports that deputy Jon Holt miraculously “was able to manually pull the vehicle up enough for the driver to slide her head out to safety.” In fact, Holt freed the woman who was trapped under the automobile by lifting it by himself.
And after the rescue, the woman was apparently “doing well.”
“Last I knew that she was doing okay and you know, medical staff believed that she will be okay and released,” Deputy Holt said.
However, as Deputy Holt has received hundreds of messages of gratitude for his service and bravery, the cop seems to prefer a different label for himself, saying he’s just your “average cop.”
Saying that “thinking of doing anything different is, you know, out of the question.” The modest policeman who has also served in the Virginia Army National Guard and in Iraq replied, “You know, I’m just your average cop, and you know, it’s what we do.”
