A thief in Mumbai got quite literally more than he bargained for after swiping a gold necklace. Anil Jadhav took the gold chain right off a woman’s neck and led police on a merry chase before swallowing it when it became clear he would be captured.
Do you wanna guess what happens next? Police ordered a banana party for the snatcher. A dozen bananas and a couple of papayas were brought in and force-fed to the robber. After that, the police just had to wait for him to defecate to recover the chain.
“He was fed more than 40 bananas throughout the day,” Police Inspector Shankar Dhanavade said, according to AFP. “Eventually the chain was found. We made him wash and disinfect it.”
Initially, the 25-year-old thief denied stealing the gold chain, but the police were not fooled and took Jadhav to the hospital for an x-ray to confirm their suspicions. Which is when things got a little bit uncomfortable, and a whole lot sillier.
At first, Jadhav claimed that the item in the x-ray scan was not a gold chain but instead just a bone that he swallowed but the doctors and police officers were having none of it.
Doctors suggested surgery, but the police thought that would be too expensive and opted for bananas instead.
They fed Jadhav “a special liquid” and ordered him to consume four-dozen bananas, in order to speed his digestion of the stolen loot.
Jadhav’s family also arrived with bananas and urged him to consume everything put in front of him.
