Student Who Was Suspended for Saying ‘Illegal Alien’ Gets the Last Laugh After Year-Long Legal Battle

Some stories make you shake your head so hard it feels like you sprained your common sense. A North Carolina high school suspended a student last year—for using the term “illegal alien.” Yes, seriously. But at long last, that ridiculous overreach has been corrected. Christian McGhee, the 16-year-old at the center of it, will now receive $20,000 and a public apology from the Davidson County Board of Education.

It never should’ve happened. But at least this young man and his family can finally breathe a little easier.

Back in April 2024, McGhee asked a question during a vocabulary lesson at Central Davidson High School: whether the term “alien” referred to “space aliens or illegal aliens who need green cards.” For that, he was slapped with a three-day out-of-school suspension for supposedly making a “racially insensitive” remark that disrupted class.

A classmate threatened to “kick his a**” over the question, but sure—Christian was the problem.

The school’s claim was that his question caused a disruption and violated their policy against “abusive” or “disruptive” language. But instead of using common sense and maybe a hallway conversation, the administration decided to ruin a teenager’s record—and potentially his future athletic scholarship hopes.

His mother, Leah McGhee, rightly sounded the alarm. “He is devastated and concerned that the racism label on his school record will harm his future goal of receiving a track scholarship,” she wrote. “Because of his question, our son was disciplined and given THREE days OUT of school suspension for ‘racism.’”

That “racism” label? It’ll now be wiped clean. The school has agreed to scrub all mention of racial bias from Christian’s record and issue a public apology. The $20,000? That’s to help with tuition at the private school he had to transfer to after the whole fiasco.

The Liberty Justice Center took on the case, and thank God they did. Without them, the McGhee family might’ve been steamrolled by a school system more concerned with virtue signaling than actual education.

Even President Trump chimed in, writing Christian a letter praising him for standing firm in his values. “Do not be discouraged by the radical leftists who will stop at nothing to decimate the freedoms we have worked tirelessly to achieve,” the letter read. Amen to that.

Now, in what can only be described as the most poetic ending possible, the school board member who tried to shame Christian’s mother by dredging up a 14-year-old arrest? That same board member, Ashley Carroll, was arrested this April for a DWI. She’s no longer with the school board. As the saying goes: the internet never forgets, and neither does karma.

In the end, the case was settled, the school is apologizing, and one very strong teenager just showed the rest of the country what standing your ground looks like. So hats off to Christian McGhee. Never back down, kid. America needs more young men like you.
