One of the most pious and emotional feelings a woman can experience is becoming a mother. Being a mother necessitates additional feelings, adjustments, and most importantly, care for the newborn that will be bridging the gap between two people’s lives. The fact that a woman is only referred to as a “mother” when a “boy” is born is not particularly significant. However, this lady is celebrating her motherly joy after giving ‘birth’ to a cat.
Since she was a little child, cat lover and photographer Lucy Schultz has volunteered at the neighborhood shelter and fostered kittens, but she has never had a cat of her own prior till recently. When Lucy and her three-year partner Steven reached financial stability, they made the decision to start a family.
They finally decided on a 5-month-old orange and white male at SoulDog Rescue in Colorado after months of searching for “the one.” They were so overjoyed to have the little furball at home that they decided to plan a picture shoot. But it wasn’t the pet-owner shooting you might have anticipated!
The couple really got into it. The Denver-based photographer and her partner decided to announce the new member of her family in a manner similar to moms of human infants.
Lucy and Steven eventually went through each stage of the typical childbirth photoshoot, even “breastfeeding,” and they even added a caption to the pictures that say:
“On 1/10/18 we welcome our first baby kitten, a neutered male DLH,” Lucy commented the images. “He is 22″ long and weighed 6 pounds 7 oz. He is already eating solid food. Name to be announced. We are so in love.”
Schultz posted the feline photo shoot on Facebook, and since then, the images have been shared more than 73,000 times. In some photos, Schultz appears to be giving birth to the cat, which hasn’t been given a name. In other pictures, she and her boyfriend, Steven, are glowing like new parents.
“It was definitely crossing my mind ‘am I really doing this?’” Schultz said. “People think we’re really extra, and it’s the cat that’s the most extra. We were just laughing at his expressions, and how he fell asleep.”
Nearly 40,000 people have commented on the pics, saying everything from “the only kind of baby pictures I like” to griping that the photos are “distasteful, disturbing and creepy.”
“So cute :’) he looks just like his father!” one user wrote.
“This is honestly the best thing I have EVER seen,” another added.
“These photos are weird. Lol,” another person wrote.
In a way, Schultz was hoping for that divisive response, but she also wanted to declare her new identity as a cat lady.
“You either love it or hate it, and there’s a lot of discussion going on,” Shultz said. “People might think I’m a little odd, but I am, and that’s OK with me!”
“So I’ve been thinking of this idea for a while because I’m totally a crazy cat lady who didn’t have any cats,” Schultz added. “So, I decided as soon as I got a cat, it’s a big milestone for me and sort of like the hallmark of me settling down and starting my menagerie of future cats, and so the first one is pretty special.”
