As tensions between Moscow and the west mounted amid the Ukraine war, Russian President Vladimir Putin promised ‘consequences you have never seen’ for countries that attempt to interfere in the conflict.
The risk of nuclear war between Russia and the West is now “considerable”, according to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
This week, Britain revealed that it has placed Special Forces in the country to train and advise the Ukrainian military. Britain has been one of Ukraine’s biggest supporters.
And now, a nuclear weapon that could bypass modern missile defenses and will be aimed at the United Kingdom if provoked by the West further. Russia plans to have the weapon ready by the fall, but military analysts believe that Russia will not be able to meet such an early deadline because Russia only started conducting nuclear tests this week.
Russia has the world’s largest stockpile of nuclear warheads, with around 6,250 in total. The U.S. has around 5,550. These are fractions of the stockpiles that both countries once held, during the Cold War, but it doesn’t take many warheads to erase cities.
Earlier this month, the Kremlin hailed the successful test of a nuclear-capable intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) called Sarmat.
However, Russia gave the U.S. a heads-up first, to avoid misunderstandings, and the Pentagon claimed not to be worried about the episode, despite its conspicuous timing. Sarmat is expected to go into production later this year, following further testing.
More details of this story from a The Daily Mail Report:
“Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced his regime’s latest nuclear-capable missile will be deployed as early as this autumn, saying it will ‘force those who try to threaten Russia to think twice’.
The Sarmat missile, or ‘Satan II’, is said to be the world’s longest-range intercontinental ballistic missile, capable of striking a target 11,200 miles away – meaning it could easily strike targets in the US and Europe.
Putin hailed the development of the missile, which was successfully test-fired earlier this week, ‘a big, significant event’ for Russia’s defense industry, saying the Sarmat will ‘ensure Russia’s security from external threats and make those who try to threaten our country with aggressive rhetoric think twice.’
‘The missile can break through all modern anti-missile defences,’ he declared.
‘There is nothing like this anywhere in the world, and won’t be for a long time.’
Western military experts said the Sarmat is capable of carrying 10 or more nuclear warheads and decoys – easily enough to wipe out territories the size of Britain or France in a single strike.”
